This is a transcript of two oral history interviews with General C. Craig Cannon. The first interview begins with a discussion of Cannon's military career and service during World War II. He talks about his work as General Dwight D. Eisenhower's aide following the war and the routines of the chief-of-staff's office. He also discusses Eisenhower's move to Columbia University and later position with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Europe. He ends the interview with personal observations on General Alfred M. Gruenther, Eisenhower's NATO staff members and his own relationship with Eisenhower. The second interview continues his comments on working for General Eisenhower, including Eisenhower's trip to the Far East and reunion with General Douglas MacArthur. The interview moves on to Eisenhower's entrance into politics and Cannon's concerns about Eisenhower as a candidate. He provides additional comments on Eisenhower's position at Columbia University, his work with NATO and comments on Eisenhower's relationships with his colleagues, politics and the political aspects of the NATO assignment. Cannon also provides personal insights and assessments on Eisenhower. The interview ends with an anecdote concerning Eisenhower's death and Cannon's assessment of books written by Merle Miller and Kay Summersby about Eisenhower.
